Basics Of VPLS - Virtual Private LAN Service

Creating secure tunnels on the internet to connect Ethernet networks in different locations into a single 'virtual' LAN is done by VPLS - Virtual Private LAN Service. As per the definition, it is service that uses packet switching over IP networks to create multi-point to multi-point Ethernet based communication.

The technology used by a VPLS is based on Virtual Private Networking (VPN), by means of which the subscriber gets a secure tunnel connecting the LAN to the main network. This main provider network emulates a bridge which makes all participating LANs appear to be on the same Ethernet LAN. The concept is that all members that belong to a certain group or a company should have secure access to the corporate network, irrespective of their individual locations.

A VPLS enables the movement of the Ethernet packet data through a secure tunnel without mixing it up with other data on the internet. Consider again the emulation provided by the main network which bridges all the multiple networks. The whole setup works like an Ethernet LAN which has nothing to do with the rest of the internet.

If say, for example, a company wanted to give a branch office access to the network and servers at the main office, it would mean having to connect via the internet. But using VPN technology allows them to burrow a tunnel through the internet which is accessible only to the company. It is as good as having a cable laid out between the branch and the head office.

The difference is that this is a virtual cable and can be created and discarded as necessary, and it does not have to be only between two points. A VPLS has the capability to connect a large number of LANs in different locations and make the whole thing look like a single Ethernet LAN connected together by physical cables. It removes geographic limitations, and users who want to access the network no longer need to be tethered to a desktop at a specific location.

It does need a certain amount of support from the ISP in question. As a rule, Internet Service Providers do offer VPN support. However, some ISPs may charge clients more for VPN use on their network, so it's worth a mention.

That said, customers need not worry about it all that much. That is because the VPLS - Virtual Private LAN Service will be the one dealing with the ISPs. All the customer sees is that every LAN it has anywhere in the world can now be bridged into a single corporate Ethernet network The VPLS allows the company to communicate on a high-speed network that is just as secure as if all participants were sitting on a physical network in the same building.
